Despite having had an incalculable effect on science, technology, archaeology and ethnology, it is the emotive spirit of an artist’s print that aligns most with the inventive tools of modern life and thought. The exhibition Sydney-Lahore: Prints from the Collections of Cicada Press and Saeed Akhtar Studio celebrates this spirit in an attempt to make prints from diverse regions of the world, converse with each other. The idea of this show originated when Printmaking graduates from National College of Arts Lahore, Fatima Saeed and Imran Ahmad enrolled in the Masters Program at UNSW College of Art & Design, UNSW Australia. With Michael Kempson, Senior Lecturer, Convener of Printmaking Studies and Director of Cicada Press at UNSW | Art & Design as their teacher, they invited Saeed Akhtar and Usman Saeed for Cicada Press Residency in July, 2013. The prints produced during the residency are being exhibited for the first time in this show. The educational scope of this show is extended further in a twofold way: both the collections in Sydney and Lahore present a survey of the milestones in the development of Printmaking and through exhibiting them together, aim to foster a dialogue between art practices in the two cities. Saeed Akhtar Studio is grateful to Shakir Ali Museum Lahore, Adil Salahuddin, Talat and Dabir Ahmad, Naazish Ata-Ullah, Anwar Saeed, Afshar Malik, Asmaa Mumtaz and Mahmood Rahman for their generous loans to this exhibition.
